The Zoom H4n is a professional handheld recorder featuring balanced mic inputs. Can also be used as a USB pre-amp!
Its onboard X/Y stereo condenser mics are arranged with the right and left mics on the same axis. This design ensures that the mics are always an equal distance from the sound source for perfect localisation without phase shifting. Frequency response remains uniform throughout your recording. The result is great stereo recording with natural depth and accurate imaging every time.
Choose up to 24-bit/96-kHz linear PCM WAV files for audio resolution that surpasses CD quality. Or, when maximum recording time with smaller file size is desired, select a variety of MP3 formats to produce smaller files suitable for web or e-mail distribution.
The H4n uses compact SD or high-capacity SDHC memory cards of up to 32GB. Unlike other media such as tape or discs, SD cards produce no mechanical noise, are not disturbed by vibrations and are readily available for your convenience.
The H4n is the only handheld recorder that allows recording on four channels simultaneously by using your own external mics with its onboard mics. Use its built-in mixer to blend the channels for perfectly balanced recordings of extraordinary depth and clarity.

There`s a lot to say about the Zoom H4n, mainly good things.First of all, the quality of the recordings is awesome. Both in stereo mics and aux inputs you will get quality recordings. If you are a sound engineer planning on recording ambient backgrounds, crowd cheers, live concerts, or basically anything you can hear, this is a great product.Sure, it is not so cheap compared to the H1 or H2 models, but it is certainly worth the price. There are some neat features such as 2 sec. automatic pre-recording, that prevents you from missing the first words from an interviewee, or the start of a song. Also, arranged in a perfect X/Y axis, the built in microphones are great, even for use in a professional recording studio. The built in speaker is not great, which means you should use a headphone for monitoring at all times. The inputs are really, really sensitive, so if you`re recording something with high SPL, you should be careful to avoid clipping. I have recently recorded a concert in 50% input volume and it clipped most of the time. There`s no room for me to speak about all the other cool stuff, but, anyway, with up to 24 bits 48khz recording in up to 4 channels (the auxs also have phantom power!), this is the guy you`re looking for if you want to spend a little bit more and have a LOT of extra features.- Great thingsGreat built in XY micsAlso a USB 2.0 interfaceUp to 48 Khz, 24-bit 4-channel recording- Not so great thingsNot so cheapA little bit heavy. Can`t carry around in your pocket like the H1Super sensitive mics. You have to be careful if you`re not familiarized with the recording volumes you need. The menus and controls are a little bit confusing at first. They`re not really intuitive.- OverallIf you are familiar with basic audio recording technology and if you want to take a step further in your field or studio recordings, this is the guy. If you just want to record yourself playing the guitar in your house, go for the cheaper models.
