What is a Vocal Condenser Mic?

These mics, also known as large-diaphragm condenser mics, are designed with large capsules (usually 1" in diameter or more) to capture a full sound from the recording subject. Most often associated with vocal recording, these can actually be used for many forms of recording, especially lead instruments and percussion.

Based upon the principle of a capacitor, condenser mics require a static voltage (often referred to as Phantom Power) with which to operate. The sound captured is turned into an electrical signal based on changes in voltage across the two think metal plates that make up the capsule of the microphone.
