What is a Microphone?

In its most basic form, a microphone is designed to turn acoustic waves (sound) into electrical signals. This means that what is heard can be captured and sent somewhere else. One of the earliest uses of a microphone was as part of a telephone. The microphone part of the handset turns the human voice into an electrical signal so that it cam be passed through the telephony systems into sound that can be hear in the other person's earpiece. But mics have come on a bit since then...

There are now microphones available for every conceivable application, from singing on stage to miking up the heartbeat of a bird sitting on an egg for research. And everything in between!
